A pox on thee! I will hex you!!
Not sure what this new realm does ...

Relying on bolts so far. I'm confused ... why would any one want to curse their own weapon? Is there any possible use for that? Hex is like a bard ... you cast a single spell at a time continuously, and you need to stop "spelling" to cast something else. I won't give much away ... If you want to know, then play :)

I got tired of the encumbrance from my 15lb trump weapon that Farmer Maggot gave me, so, upon receiving a +4 Elven Cloak from the Orc Q, I decided to give the Vault a go. After a couple days scumming for !speed in the BM, I spied a _Speed! That's the good news. The bad news was I had to sell my trump weapon to get it. So I was committed to getting Sting at all costs, having given up my only free action. Thankfully, stealth prevailed, and while I did spot an Ancient Blue Dragon and a pattern ghost and other nasties, I was able to grab the sword and boogie on out of there.
Now, I think I need to rely a bit on melee with this character, so I'll need a decent ring of damage ...

I've been playing this guy like a super weak melee high mage, about as powerful as an Arcane HM, maybe. But then I notice that I can cast more than one spell at a time ... Hmmm, I just assumed he was like a really gimped bard. So, I'll need to rethink a bit. I can currently do 3 spells at once, and perhaps this goes up with level? In the mean time, I built up a top of the Dragon Lair skimming kit, so I'll at least continue that strategy until I can score a copy of my third book.
Oh, no eat magic! Also, why do all my characters need to engage in epic battles with New Life. Wis/Chr are super buff, and were born that way. But I finally de-screwed my con and life rating, but only enough to get them back to normal (18/100 and 100%, respectively). Oh, well, best to just forget about it and play as is ...

I'm starting to wonder if there even are high level Hex books? Counting all the books I saw while town scumming, I'm over 30 3rd level books, but no Hex. Heck, here's a Hellfire Tome for crying out loud ;)
Well, I've gotten Thorin, which is wonderful. I still have no hope of melee ... Sting is not the weapon for me!

OK, maybe melee isn't a lost cause after all :)
I spot a 4th attack, and considerable damage even with Sting and even without a good ring of damage. Maybe I should scum Zantetsuken?
Still, Fafner kicked my butt ...

I was actually doing better with my distance approach. That damage of 326/round looks good, especially for a high mage. But my melee accuracy is pretty darn terrible, and I'd like to be able to use some defensive/recovery spells rather than deplete my !Healing supply. Darn ... It took a while to get Zantetsuken suitably cursed too!

Well, that's enough for the time being. Except for the 4th book, I've learned what all the spells do. Pretty interesting stuff, but not super strong. Lots of combos and strategy, maybe? Perhaps I need to think more about how best to use stuff? Oh, the last spell in book 3 is a familiar one, and it is very strong :) CL40, though ...
Anyway, I like to buff my combat for posing here, but that really chews thru your mana. For real fights, I do better ... far better ... just attacking from a distance, hasted and double resisting. Melee will end up requiring healing most of the time, but the distance approach never does. I'm really really hoping there is a good "pure caster" distance type spell in the fourth book. Much like the Bard's Wizardry of Sauron.
So far, bards are much stronger (Doomcall?). But these guys get the job done OK.

I finally just decided to go in to this quest, even after Gachapin and his hydra army spanked me in the dragon's lair. I won that fight, but I couldn't get next to Gachapin thanks to his 30+ 11 headed hydra shields. In the end, I got him with line of site effect spells, but it was hard.
The Cloning Pits was the same story. Even with a near 200AC and +15 speed, those buggers proved troublesome. Worst of all was the Iron Lich generated by the queen ants ... Ouch! The dreaded good vs. evil summoning combo. I sold out to shut that down, and was doing well until my mana ran out. I probably should have brought some !restoremana. It would have saved me several healing, I think.
Well, time to go claim me boots :)

Still looking for power ... still fighting with New Life. Next one up: Wis 18/110 Chr 18/120 Con 18/80. Sigh. I did get back 3 points of Int, though. Maybe I'll just stay with this life as getting anything below 18/120 on charisma is just impossible. For the record, Int 18/100 and Con 18/100 is all I'm asking for!
So, this is as good as I get at melee. I don't think this class is meant to use Sting, though. If I could find something like the Glaive of Pain? Dunno. But the main problem is weapon skill. It takes heroism, blessing, and +12 to hit from a ring to reach 50% accuracy vs. dragons. Leave something out and accuracy is down towards the 30-40% range.

Run in fear from invisible pink unicorns!!! Seriously, that is what I did. OK, maybe I was chuckling a bit as I fled for my life ...
So, I'm completely wonderful at "One and Done" (tm). But I can't do much else ... A single charge from a wand of striking does way more damage than I can hope to with melee, so why not enjoy 18 of them? I don't think dragons appreciate them as much as I do, though.
OK, maybe I'll do some Angband quests. I'm pretty weak, though, and running away all the time gets frustrating.
