a couple of the changes to the game mechanics have tactical implications. you can no longer flee up and down stairs. and it's a lot harder to run from trouble in the wilderness too, because no word of recall and no going up to a global map. I've been chased halfway across the continent a few times already.

I think the random wilderness is a great change, that was one of the highlights of Zangband in my opinion that got lost over time. It encourages wilderness exploration, but at the same time the difficulty of escaping enemies in the wilderness adds a new level of danger to that exploration. I thought it seemed like a fun challenge.
