Oops. Back to the drawing board. Brawlboy2 actually did get a potion of experience in the early midgame as well. He suffered for having to go for a long time without a good damage weapon but ended up getting a very good array of equipment--indeed, so much so I did not bother even using a Ring of Speed. I was ready for the final battles early but had very few consumables so had to grind for some time. In the end, I didn't need that many. My battle with Morgoth was extremely easy, as my handful of Rune of Protection scrolls lasted practically forever, allowing me to beat at Morgoth mercilessly. So, overall, a fairly easy romp.
