So pleased that things turned out as they did, and shieldmaster became the perfect setup for a passive abilities-focused playstyle. Reflection and bonus defenses never stopped performing, and although the damage seemed a bit lacking at times, it was good enough to get the job done. This puts my win rate at about .75%.
A note on equipment setup: Pictured wasn't what I was using for 97% of the game. Actually, this build was legendarily stealthy through an elven cloak (later Jack's cloak), a randart body armor, and the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. That katana dropped fairly early, and it meant I'd have every res covered for the rest of the game. I kept this stealth setup even as I saw really nice equipment dropping, because why change what works? But there would be no need for stealth in the final battle, so I switched everything around to become a killing machine against the Serpent. All that remains of the original setup is those beautiful randart boots and that beautiful +13 ring of speed. No more stealth, much more damage and AC (and immunities, and sustains, and time resistance). It took probably 30 charges of healing and a bunch more potions for J, but everything went as planned. I might go on and check out Olympus+postgame stuff, but I'm slotting this one in the winner category for now.
The !beginner weapon mastery from class choice wasn't a big issue, but I never found much use for the shield bash or eye for an eye passives. Instead, I had bulwark up almost all the time despite not knowing the exact formula for damage reduction. Again, a case of not changing what works.
The most truly, utterly butt-clenching moment in this run came via doubleturn rockets from Oremorj. Otherwise, I can't recall a lategame sub-200 HP situation where I had to leave my fate up to the RNG gods. Nodens made trouble with some really rough summoning, as did the great wyrm of power. I knew enough about Morgoth and the Unicorn of Order to avoid them entirely.
This win was using a fork of PCB found here: https://github.com/GenericPseudonym/pseudoelliposchengband . The gameplay element that really "felt" different from vanilla seemed to be the availability of useful early black market items - rods of detection, wands of teleport other, staves of cure wounds, etc. Otherwise, it's allegedly minor tweaks.
Until next time.

*I* haven't changed anything in there, although there might be some changes carried from elliposchengband that I'm not aware of...
