They are right, dwarves are played much easier than half-trolls in the mid-game due to the higher WIS. I could rely on OoD consistently during statgain. No early good +speed item, but I found a weapon of Gondolin with telepathy, which helped a lot, and a good "wis. Later on, the typical priest late-game kicked in. Alter reality made me forget that it is an ironman game, and Clarvoyance looks like a maphack. Collected loads of artifacts and consumables, and then went for the big fight.
Enjoyed a lot the challenging equipment choices -- with no house and limited weight to carry, you really have to make up your mind soon.
