Question Misc editing/changing Angband gameplay

Hey, all.

New to the game & roguelikes in general.

I've been playing around with Angband and wanted to customize my experience with it - the lib\edit files initially looked like a good fit, but when I changed them (tried notepad and wordpad, deleted the appropriate raw as per instructs) it pretty much messed up my game(s).

How to save & keep the edits without messing up the game???

Help is appreciated.

Note that I have no concern with invalidating the characters legit status/submitting a modded game score. This is just for personal use.

Peace.

Well, it depends: what are you trying to do?

If you are, for instance, adding more monster races, object types, ego item types, et cetera, you will probably have to edit misc.txt as well and change the maximums, or the game will crash.

As it says, don't mess with those files unless you know what you're doing!

Two things which I thought to be 'simple':

- Edit the experience modifier for races (and/or classes) from (over) 100% to under 100% (2 digit number).

- Edit the price/buying modifier in a similiar manner to reduce prices.

Both are in order to provide a quicker/easier game-play for my self.

I found the appropriate values in the files, but (per O.P.) it does not seem to stay and stay *stable*.

These both seem to work fine for me (V 3.0.9).

Edit 1:
* Edit edit/p_race.txt: replace the 100 in the "X:" line for Human with 1.
* Remove data/p_race.raw
* Start a new game, Human (1% exp) Warrior (0%).
* Level 7 reached with 1 xp shown.

Edit 2:
* Edit edit/p_race.txt: replace the 1 (originally 100) in the "X:" line for Human with 10.
* Edit edit/p_class.txt: replace the 0 in the "I:" line for Warrior with -5.
* Remove data/p_race.raw and data/p_class.raw
* Start a new game, Human (10% exp) Warrior (-5%).
* Level 7 reached with 7 xp shown.

The changes will only be effective after restarting Angband, and maybe only for new characters.

Neither of those fixes will make the game significantly easier. You need to start playing for more efficient collection of money and EXP instead. Not to mention gear and utilities (stat potions, Healing, Banishment, Destruction, Teleport Level, etc).

If you aren't getting to 1500' in a couple hours or less, you aren't playing the game efficiently. For a newbie, the only reason to stop before 1500' is to pick up Free Action.
Otherwise, the down stairs are your most important resource in the early game.

Efficiently as defined by what? What if I want to collect screenshots of 10000 giant mice?? I'm just messing around here, ya know.

roustk - thanks. Will try that as well as the option for store prices & report.

EDIT: much like bringing the car to the mechanic - the edits seem to be working fine now! Eh. Eh. Thanks for all advice & contributions!

Defined as minimizing real time between now and your next win.

If you want to win with a mage, but you have never won, the fastest route is to win the game with a dwarf warrior first and then use your knowledge when you go back and play magi. If you spend too much time playing the first 40 dLevels over and over, you are probably teaching yourself habits that will hurt you in the later stages of the game.

What Eddie said. Just buy a Scroll of Recall, maybe a longbow & arrows if you can afford it, and start going down.

With the latest V dev-releases, I buy the following:
2 ?Phase Door
1 !Cure Serious Wounds for confusion emergencies
1 ?Recall
character-appropriate weapon. (biggest-damage weapon that still gets max blows, usually a Rapier, Dagger or Main Gauche.)
Maybe a Longbow & arrows, depending on race/class
Maybe soft leather armor.

This generally gets me down beyond dl 10.
