Comp 182

Comp 182 is up -- it's a PWMAngband Human Summoner. You might want to steer clear of long ocean voyages with this character.

The win criteria haven't quite been locked down yet, so don't get angsty if your place in the comp changes overnight. The win condition we settle on is probably going to reward minimizing your turncount, though.

Am I correct that this is a Windows competition? How do I run this on a MacBook Pro using OSX?

PWMAngband is developped in a Windows environment, so I can only maintain Windows code. It runs fine with Linux if you use Wine. For OSX, don't think you can do anything.

By the way, if you start the comp with Beta 3, I STRONGLY suggest you don't activate your DSMs, it would destroy them (yeah I goofed again with the BREATH effect ). Beta 4 will be out tonight, it will fix that and also bring back animations in turn-based mode.

Okay, now I want equipment items that, when activated, do some powerful effect and then destroy themselves, so you can only use them once.

Just, please, no tasteless jokes about suicide vests...

Here are some hints to survive the early game:
- take your time, dive carefully, build your equipment and resources as slowly as you can (playing Human will help leveling faster, but the lack of SI could be problematic)
- use scrolls of summon monster over the Summon Monster spell early on, since they summon S_ANY (1d3 stronger monsters) instead of S_MONSTER (one regular monster)
- scum for a good ranged weapon, it will be your main source of damage
- use, abuse, spam summoning when you have to fight something hard; don't feel bad about summoning something (even a static monster) in a corridor, staying behind and wiping your enemies with your ranged weapon
- the same way, you can use a summon to block a corridor and stop monster hordes while you run away
- starting from 750ft, stop IDing by use potions, as you *really* don't want to lose one point of STR or WIS by quaffing Intellect or Nimbleness, until you ID both of those
- starting around 1250ft, watch out for monsters with MOVE_BODY flag, they will push past summons to melee you, and usually hit hard; Beorn is a common source of character deaths when playing a Summoner

Special PWMAngband rule of safety: don't save the game (close the client) while in the dungeon, since it removes turn-based mode, makes all friendly monsters hostile and leaves the character connected to the server five more seconds before getting disconnected (this could easily mean the end of your character). Saving in town is fine (no timeout). If you really want to save in the dungeon, shut down the server first (with ctrl-c on the console -- it's safer than with the "close" box), because it automatically disconnects the client.
