Screen is garbled/garbage on Ubuntu 14.04

Hello,

I'm trying to get vanilla Angband running on Ubuntu 14.04. I have done:

$ sudo apt-get install angband

And it seemed to work fine. But when I start the game ($ angband) the screen is garbled and I can almost make out any number of warnings flitting across it.

Just wondering if this is a known issue. Should I just compile from source?

Thanks,
-Travis

Just want to be clear, I'm starting the console/curses version. And it's just special characters of all different colors everywhere. hitting keys on the keyboard makes it jump around randomly.

I'm assuming there is something wrong with my curses profile?

If it helps, the server is headless and I am connecting via ssh.

Thanks,
-Travis

This is clearly not the proper way to solve this issue, but I've run the windows version with vine in ubuntu without problems.

I would try building from source -- it should be relatively simple, Nick et al have done a good job of the build tools.

Okay I'll try that. Just download the source for 3.5.0, it links to http://rephial.org/wiki/Compiling which gives me a 404.

Any other secret compiling instructions available? I'm going to try the old standby of ./configure; make; sudo make install

I would love to leave behind X windows support, since this is a headless server in the cloud.

In case anyone is following along at home, I found the compilation instructions here: http://trac.rephial.org/wiki/Compiling

Looks like it works, I've got the game running in curses mode!

Just FYI the way to "not have X11 support" was to simply not have X11 installed on my machine.

That was actually quite easy!

There's a flag you can use that will disable X11 compilation (actually, I think it's a flag that you have to not pass to make -DX11 or something), but uninstalling X before configure will also work I guess

No, I'm afraid Angband's supposed to look like that.

Was the character hallucinating??

I'm alarmed to hear that the Ubuntu package is no longer working, but since it's 3.3.2 it's perhaps better for me to concentrate on packaging 3.5 instead of worrying about it ...
