Angband has always been a side stream game, it's always had a rather underground kinda feel to it. The community took a long time to get away from newsgroups and usenet for much of it's hardcore players. It's always been discouraged when someone decides to try to make a graphical user interface beyond the basic tile interface we have. AngbandTK and Utomno are the only two that I've seen that got anywhere with it and both died out a long while ago.
Just FYI, there is work ongoing in V to provide the ability to have both AngbandTk and just-text -style games, without the kind of code fragmentation that AngbandTk caused.

You do have a point, many of the hardcore players NEVER left usenet. People want to see it continue and flourish, but are to set in the old ways of the web. sigh!

I do agree TK was very intrusive into the code of the game. But, even with all that intrusiveness it was a positive attempt to fix some of the graphic faults that Angband has. I'm glad to hear that work is ongoing in this area, it bods well for the future success of the game. Or at least it's continued existence.

I should take a look at the code server and all the planned changes one of these days. Not today though!

Angband has no graphic faults. Maybe it's not quite as friendly as it could be to a lot of people, though.

sorry, I should have said limitations.

I'm just playing at being a devils advocate here. I personally play the game without the graphics, it's what I prefer, but what so many of the mainstream gamers want from their games is the visual element first.

People were trying to think of ways to increase the popularity of this game and it's varient base, a good long look at visuals I think would do more then all the viral marketing schemes, or dedicated web sites/blogs or reviews.

I've been playing this game for as long as it's been around, and I've told hundreds of my friends and family and acquaintances, most who are avid gamers about this game and the amount of fun it is. The game is complex and has a lot of options you can do with it, but they never get to that point. They all seem to stall out at the lack of visual representation, even after finding out about the tiles they still balk based on the overall presentation.
