Is it easier to find the Rings of Power now?
I just started playing 3.1.2v2 after having taken the past couple years off. In my current game, I'm at 4900 feet and have found all the rings of power including The One. That's the first time I've ever found The One, and the first time I've ever found more than two Rings of Power in the same game. I think this character has found all the other artifact rings for that matter.
Has the drop code changed to make it easier to find those things? |

No, the drop code for rings of power is about the same. You just got lucky.
Also, hanging out at dl 98 is a lot likelier to get rings of power than slow diving. |

It seems we have a disagreement. Who's right?

I think it is more likely to generate them outright, but Pete may be right about somehow managing equal creation chances for artifact jewelry. I don't believe it, but I will happily stipulate it.
However, the change to object depth = max {ML, DL} means that the three are droppable by any monster at DL 90+ without an out-of-depth check, and the one is droppable at DL 90+ without an out-of-depth check by any monster with DROP_GOOD. That's an enormous change. Of course, I haven't looked at the code. I just read the reports here. I could be way off, but that's my understanding. |

Yes, max(ML, DL) would be a big change. But in my game, The One and another of the power rings were generated on the dungeon floor rather than dropped. I do not play with scumming. The One was in a small vault, not sure about the other. The other two were dropped by deep monsters in deep levels so that change would not have affected much.

I still have never found the One Ring in any game I have ever played in the last decade. I think you just got lucky.
![]() And at least one of the 3 other Rings drop for me every game, most often when I am otherwise ready for Morgoth but I'm scumming around for consumables.
