Question about experience drain
When a monster drains my experience, if I choose not to use a Potion of Restore Life or other method for reinstating my highest experience points but choose to do so by killing monsters, do I simply gain experience points from the monsters I kill up to my previous experience point max and then I will gain experience from there (ie using the monsters to "refill" with no effect on my max) or does my max experience points gain as well? I'm trying to figure out what happens and can't place it exactly.

I think your max experience increases, but only by half. Therefore as long as you're still below your max experience, 50% of the experience gain is wasted.

I'm not sure about the 50% ratio but I also believe it works this way.

Isn't that ratio the basis of the "grape jelly exploit"? Was that ever fixed, or does it not apply any more.

According to this thread, the "grape jelly trick" was fixed a long time ago.

Ah okay, that seems like a much different trick than this thread. Thanks for the link

First stop on Google indicates it was fixed before Angband branched from Moria.

At least, if the XP gain is split between current and max XP, it can't be 50/50 because you could never reach your max XP again this way : the difference between max XP and current XP would be constant.
Assuming you don't have/use a !RestoreLife, I believe the quicker you get back to your max XP, the less XP is lost in the end. So 90% gained in current XP would be very favorable. If full XP is added to current XP and only a portion to max XP, it's different.
