Rings of Power
Why are there only the 3 rings of power in V? 7 for the dwarves and 9 for the Nazgul were also made. Apparently 3 of the dwarven rings were consumed by dragon fire.
I think it'd be a nice treat for taking down a Ringwraith if you got a ring of power for it. |

I assume that you're counting the One Ring, but that's a separately forged ring to the 3, 7 and 9, so I didn't count it. (puts on ring of post-hoc justification)

There the One Ring and the Three Elven rings. Were any of the Dwarven of Human rings ever named? That could be part of it.
Also, the Elven rings were the only ones that didn't corrupt the wearer.

One could always make names (like Sil did for the Balrogs), or look to old MERP sources (I think this is where Angband got the Ringwraith names). Come to think of it, naming the 9 after their bearers is reasonable. You don't need to worry about 3 dwarf rings being melted if you don't want as there is no canonical time setting for the game (or if there is one, it is before the rings were forged anyway...). |

ToME2 has the Ringwraiths generate random artifact rings each time you kill them. They're all cursed, and usually pretty awful.
The ring slots are incredibly heavily oversubscribed already; how much room is there to add additional useful stuff for them? |

The Dwarven ones corrupted the dwarves they were given to, but the corruption didn't make them susceptible to Sauron, but rather to their base instincts. They got greedy and that lead to their ruination. Apparently Sauron took those he could back, including torturing Thrain for his.

Clearly the rings have benefits to them. The Nazgul are all powerful sorcerors and have lived far beyond their mortal span. Clearly the rings also have a rather large downside to them. Perhaps they could have large positives, like im_fire/cold/elec/acid and telepathy or regen, but balanced by large negatives, like -speed. In addition they'd be cursed so that if you chose to wear them for the positives, you'd need to be certain that you really wanted them. |
