Where have all the dragon pits gone?
I have a character at dlvl 98 with ~1M turns and I don't think a single dragon pit has been generated. Has anyone else definitely seen (or definitely not seen) a dragon pit?
I suspect this may be a bug with the pit/nest refactors from awhile ago. If so, it definitely needs to be fixed for 3.3. |

I just jumped around a few times in debug mode and did see a dragon pit. When I put in the new pit stuff, I ran some stats simulation to verify that they did what I wanted. If you turn stats generation on, you can see for yourself by doing debug command 'P', setting your command-count to be the DL you want stats for.

It's gotten me good at figuring out which demon pits are worth clearing, I'll say that much... |

At dlevel 80 I got 2 dragon pits, 2 giant pits and a graveyard (and one cavern) in 10 levels. I think you just got unlucky. |

PS: There's seldom any strategic benefit to this, but convincing a Horned Reaper to eat an entire demon pit is one of the little joys of Angband. |

I came across quite a few dragon pits when I was roaming around the depths in the June 22nd nightly with cheat_room on.
Although right now I'm messing around trying to test out some new additions to pits.txt and the RNG is stubbornly refusing to generate any of them. ![]() |

Yep. I did finally get one of them to come up (turns out dark elf pits are pretty neat, but wow, much nastier than I anticipated) so it's just the RNG being stubborn. I haven't even come across any orc or jelly pits yet. Does the fact X percent of levels are now cavern levels effectively reduce the odds of pits appearing?

Given that cavern and labyrinth levels can't have pits, pits are effectively more rare now, unless someone adjusted their placement rate to compensate for the new level types. But that would result in normal levels having a higher pit density, which doesn't seem necessarily desirable.

I guess this just demonstrates the real limits of anecdotal evidence w.r.t. playtesting and bug reports. |
