Stun Protection vs Sauron and Morgoth

I'm getting close to the final fights and just wanted to ask how important it was to have stun protection vs the big uniques and especially the final 2.

I have covered all resists except nether and recently got pconf so can start thinking about taking on Atlas and similar crew. I'm playing a dwarf warrior currently clvl 48. I've got over 1100 hps and enough consumables to last the final fights I think, but I'm worried about getting low health, high stun and failing a TO and seeing the RIP screen. I've considered setting up a few destructed areas and just teleporting when I get low with a scroll, but I'm actually really low on scrolls of teleport. I've not found many and had a really nasty fight with some hell hounds and Ancalagon, who I had escape from. So I still need to kill him too.

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure stun is a nonissue in the final fights. I would go for it.

Teleporting yourself is not generally recommended in the late game, since the dungeon gets quite dangerous and you can easily teleport from one bad situation to another. Instead make use of Teleport Away -- rods of Teleport Away are especially valuable because they can't be drained by Morgoth's drain-charges touch attack. Of course, this is not a failure-proof escape.

In any event, stunning is fairly rare against Morgoth and almost never happens against Sauron. Drinking Healing potions should be enough to keep you safe. You do want to fight in a destructed area, though; if Morgoth summons, you can phase away and be out of line-of-sight of everything. If you get overwhelmed, teleport Morgoth away and then use Destruction to clear out his summons (or teleport them away too).

Good luck!

FWIW, For classes who fight at a distance, like mages and rangers, I find that I do not like fighting Morgoth in destructed areas, because phasing away does not guarantee that you absolutely 100% end up out of line of sight of anything. It also does not give you enough shots at Morgoth at a distance, and sometimes there are unsymmetrical LoS situations in a destructed area that are not so obvious, allowing Morgoth a free shot at you. It's much better to be in a vault with permanent rock walls, where ducking around a corner is all you need do to get out of LoS with a 100% guarantee (and forces the big P to approach you in a predictable path). Also, in a vault, phase is guaranteed to take you just outside the vault. Or, be on the other side of a large, open area, with a pre-dug LoS escape tunnel prepared. That gives you a number of turns to do your distance attacks, and step out of LoS to heal, mass banish/banish, or wait for P to approach, TO him and then destruct for summons if need be.

Thanks for the advice. Final fight was quite easy in the end, only really had one dangerous moment when I was at around 250 hitpoints. I TO instead of reading phase door and healing. RNG was with me this time, but that was definitely an error.

As a warrior, you TO has a certain failure rate but I think phase door + heal would have been worse. After you phase door, it's the big M's turn, if he decides to cast a spell, you are probably toast. I think the safe way would be a potion of *heal or life. As a warrior I assume you melee M anyway, even if not, phase door after healing yourself up is much safer.

Forgot: congrats on the win :-)

Thanks for the grats. I thought I'd get a fresh start on the next char only to lose a kobold rogue to Mughash on dlvl3. Angband giveth and taketh away in equal measure.

As for my play error, I was fighting in a large destructed area, so phase door would have most certainly placed me in a LOS spot so healing could take place. I could have *healed as you said and actually that is definitely the right play in hindsight, but nerves and a need to pick my daughter up from cram school made me make a rash decision. My next goal is to kill all the uniques before taking on the big M.

edit* Yes I did melee him, but he also wore a good dozen slay evil bolts by the end.
